Acknowledgements Many people contributed to the writing of The Language of Animals in 1995, and since the debut of The Animal Communication Project, helpers and contributors have reached the nearly mythical “too numerous to mention.” To all of you, my heartfelt thanks. My wife, Karen, professor of biology at Peninsula College, and my son Robbie, linguistics graduate of Swarthmore College (more information), have contributed uncounted dinner-table conversations (and e-mails) about animal communication, and many helpful suggestions. Furthermore, Robbie has contributed several of the images on the ACP. My friend and fellow science writer Carolyn Strange, has for many years contributed moral support and excellent writing advice to all my projects. The Animal Communication Project represents a synthesis of thousands of pieces of information in the form of research papers (and “digests” for journalists), telephone interviews with researchers, first-hand observations, and thousands of email messages, not to mention popular books, text books, popular magazine articles and TV specials. |
